한때 미드에 푹 빠져 있던 시기에 '프렌즈'라는 드라마를 보게 되었다. 90년대 미국의 패션을 보는 재미가 있었는데, 지금 봐도 전혀 촌스럽지 않고 오히려 세련되고 개성있게 느껴진다.

There was a time when I was deeply into American TV shows, and that’s when I came across Friends. I especially enjoyed watching the ‘90s American fashion—it still feels refined and full of character, never outdated.

주인공들이 집에서 시간을 보내는 장면이 많다 보니, 편안한 옷차림이나 다양한 홈웨어가 자연스럽게 등장한다. 그 중에서도 로브를 입은 모습이 유독 기억에 남는데, 한국에서는 집에서 로브를 입는 문화가 아직 익숙하지 않아서인지, 프렌즈를 보기 전까지는 로브라는 스타일이 낯설게 느껴졌던 것 같다.

Since much of the show takes place inside the characters’ homes, comfortable outfits and different kinds of homewear appear naturally. Among them, what stood out most to me was the robe. In Korea, the idea of wearing a robe at home still isn’t very familiar, so until I watched Friends, the style itself felt a little foreign.

하지만 주인공들의 스타일링을 보니 왠지 따라 입어보고 싶다는 생각이 들기도 했다. 각자의 성격이나 라이프스타일이 반영된 개성 있는 홈웨어 패션을 보니, 단순히 잠옷이 아니라 나만의 공간에서 스스로를 표현하는 하나의 방식처럼 느껴졌다. 소파에 둘러 앉아 커피를 마시거나, 아침을 먹으며 대화를 나누는 장면마다 자연스럽게 등장하는 홈웨어는 나에게 여전히 신선하고 매력적으로 다가온다.

But seeing the characters in their robes, I found myself wanting to try it on, too. Each character’s unique homewear reflected their personality and lifestyle, making it feel less like sleepwear and more like a way of expressing oneself in a private space. Whether gathered on the sofa with coffee or sharing breakfast together, the presence of homewear in those casual scenes still feels fresh and appealing to me.

해리포터를 떠올리면, 론이 파자마 위에 스웨터를 겹쳐 입고 있던 모습이 가장 먼저 생각난다. 당시의 나에겐 파자마 위에 스웨터라는 조합이 무척 참신하게 다가왔고, 영화 속 따뜻한 기숙사의 분위기와 어우러져 더 멋있게 느껴졌던 것 같다.

When I think of Harry Potter, the first image that comes to mind is Ron wearing a sweater layered over his pajamas. At the time, that combination felt so fresh to me, and together with the cozy atmosphere of the dormitory, it seemed even more charming.

게다가 그 스웨터가 론의 어머니가 손수 짜준 옷이라는 설정이 있었던 기억도 난다. 나 역시 영화처럼 입어보고 싶다는 생각을 해본 적 있지만, 집에는 그런 목이 넓은 스웨터가 없었고, 설령 입는다 해도 나에겐 너무 답답할 것 같아 결국 시도해보진 못했다. 그렇게 내 기억 속의 파자마는 현실보다는 상상 속에서 더 따뜻하고 멋진 모습으로 남아 있다.

I also remember that the sweater was said to have been hand-knit by Ron’s mother, which made it feel even warmer. There were times I thought it would be fun to try dressing like that myself, but I never had such a wide-necked sweater at home. And even if I did, I probably would have found it too stuffy to actually wear. In the end, pajamas in my memory have remained more stylish and heartwarming in imagination than in reality.

저는 미드 길모어걸스를 좋아하는데 유쾌한 엄마와 딸의 일상 이야기라 부담 없이 영어공부할 때 많이 봤었어요. 2000년대 초반 드라마라 예전 유행했던 색감이나 스타일을 볼 수 있고, 엄마인 로렐라이와 딸인 로리의 스타일이 비슷한 듯 조금씩 다른 것도 재미있어요.

I’ve always enjoyed the show Gilmore Girls—a lighthearted story about a witty mother and daughter—which I often watched as a fun way to study English. Since it’s a drama from the early 2000s, you can see the colors and styles that were trendy back then, and it’s interesting how the mother, Lorelai, and the daughter, Rory, share a similar style while keeping their own differences.

예전 드라마지만 지금 보면 따라 입고 싶은 스타일도 많아서 옷을 유심히 보게 되는데, 특히 파자마 중에 독특하고 귀여운 프린트들이 많더라고요. 디저트가 그려진 일러스트, 폴프랭크 져지 같은 요즘에는 볼 수 없는 디자인이 많아서 드라마를 보다보면 마치 빈티지샵을 구경하는 느낌입니다.

Even though it’s an older drama, there are still so many outfits I’d want to try today, so I find myself paying close attention to what they wear. The pajamas, in particular, often feature quirky and adorable prints—like dessert illustrations or Paul Frank jerseys—that you don’t really see anymore. Watching the show sometimes feels like browsing through a vintage shop.

어릴 적, 잠버릇이 험하다 보니 일어나보면 옷이 말려 올라가 있어서 ’불편했었다’만 기억에 있는 원피스 파자마가 아마도 나의 첫 번째 파자마였던 것 같다. 두 번째 파자마는 결혼을 앞두고, 아이보리 실크 소재에 소매단과 바지단이 내 것은 자주색, 남편 것은 남색이었던 그 당시 엄마 눈에 예뻐서 사주신(ㅎㅎ) 당초 무늬의 파자마이다. 몇 번 입혀지고 몇 년을 옷장에서 지내다가 결국은 정리되었다.

When I was little, I had a habit of tossing and turning in my sleep, so I remember always waking up with my clothes all bunched up — all I recall is how uncomfortable it felt. That one-piece pajama was probably my very first pajama.

The second one came just before my wedding: an ivory silk set with damask patterns, where the cuffs and hems were purple on mine and navy on my husband’s. My mom thought they were beautiful at the time and gifted them to us. We wore them a few times, and then they spent years in the closet before I eventually let them go.

조스라운지 직원이어서 하는 말이 아니라(웃음) 나는 웜모달 그릭 파자마가 너무 좋다. 디자인도, 컬러도 예쁘지만 약간의 기모가 있고 두께감이 살짝 있는 모달/면 소재인데 촉감이 너무 좋고 포근한 느낌이다. 파자마를 입고 잠을 잘 자게 되었다는 것이 어떤 것인지 알게 된 파자마이다. 빨리 그릭을 입을 수 있는 날씨가 되었으면 좋겠다.

사실 조스라운지를 알기 전에는 잠옷에 대해 큰 관심이 없었다. 알게 된 후, 매체를 보았을 때 잠옷이 눈에 띄기 시작했는데, 그 중 ‘팬텀스레드’가 제일 생각이 난다. 의류 디자이너인 우드콕은 상당히 괴팍한 성격으로, 특히 애인에게 자신의 가혹한 시선으로 평가하고 말을 내뱉어서 괴롭히고 결국 쫓아내기를 반복하는 인물이다.

Before getting to know JO’S LOUNGE, I didn’t pay much attention to pajamas. But after discovering the brand, I started noticing them in media, and one that stands out the most is Phantom Thread. The fashion designer Reynolds Woodcock is notoriously difficult, particularly toward his lovers, whom he judges harshly and ultimately drives away.

이런 우드콕에게 새 애인 알마는 호락호락한 존재가 아니었는데, 일부러 우드콕이 먹는 음식에 독버섯을 넣고 힘들어하며 자신에게 의지하는 모습을 본 알마는 그를 조종하기 위해 계속 버섯을 이용하기로 마음 먹는다.

이 때 독버섯을 먹고 사경을 헤매는 상황에서도 우드콕은 파자마로 갈아 입고 땀을 흘리는데, 죽을 것 처럼 아픈데 그 와중에 입는 파자마라니… 이게 진짜 멋쟁이인가 싶은 장면이었다.

Woodcock’s new lover, Alma, wasn’t someone to be easily intimidated. At one point, she deliberately puts poisonous mushrooms in his food. Watching him struggle and cling to her, she decides to continue using the mushrooms to manipulate him.

Even in the scene where he’s writhing from the poison, Woodcock changes into pajamas and sweats through it. The idea that someone so sick and in pain would still slip into pajamas—it felt like true style to me.

잠옷 브랜드에서 일하게 된 이후로 무언가를 보거나 읽을 때 파자마가 보이면 반갑기도 하고 혹시 참고할만한 게 있을지 생각하는 습관 아닌 습관이 생겼다. 개인적으로 가장 좋아하는 컨텐츠는 90-00년대의 헐리우드 영화인데, ‘터미널(2004)’ 같이 톰행크스가 나오고(웃음), 따뜻한 온도를 가진 영화를 몇 번이고 돌려본다.

아쉽게도 이 영화에 파자마가 나오진 않지만, 당시 미국 영화에서 파자마가 상징하는 분위기가 나에겐 여러모로 큰 영향을 준 것 같다.

Ever since I started working at a pajama brand, I’ve found myself noticing pajamas everywhere I go or in anything I read, and instinctively thinking about whether there’s something worth referencing. Personally, my favorite content comes from Hollywood films of the ’90s and ’00s. Movies with a warm, cozy vibe, like The Terminal (2004) starring Tom Hanks (laugh), are ones I can watch over and over again.

Unfortunately, pajamas don’t appear in that film, but the atmosphere they represent in American movies of that era has influenced me in many ways.

There’s something about the feeling of warmth and comfort, yet still somehow cool—like stuffing a bagel and coffee into your mouth before heading to work in the morning. I love how pajamas strike that balance: comfortable, but somehow more put-together than a simple T-shirt. Soon, when the crisp fall days arrive, I want to lie on the sofa on a weekend afternoon, watch You’ve Got Mail (1998), and drift off to sleep.

내 기억 속 파자마는 약 12년 전 발매된 스웨덴 출신의 DJ 겸 아티스트 Avicii(아비치)의 'Wake me up' 뮤직비디오에 등장했던 클래식한 파자마이다.

사실 이 음악이 릴리즈되고 주목받았던 건 미국의 의류 브랜드인 랄프로렌의 라인 중 하나인 더블알엘(RRL)의 의상이 뮤직비디오에 다수 등장한다는 건데, 한 브랜드의 의상이 뮤직비디오 전반에 걸쳐 마치 컬렉션을 보여주듯이 노출되어서 팬들에겐 아직까지 회자되는 영상이다.

In my memory, the pajamas that stand out the most are the classic ones featured in the music video for “Wake Me Up” by Swedish DJ and artist Avicii, released about 12 years ago.

What made this video particularly notable was that a number of outfits from Ralph Lauren’s RRL line appeared throughout. The brand’s pieces were showcased almost like a full collection within the video, making it a clip that fans still talk about even today.

영상 초반 오두막 안에서 나오는 파자마는 전형적인 미국의 클래식한 잠옷으로 보이는데, 모델과의 조합이나 배경, 색감 모두가 너무 잘 어우러져 아직도 나에겐 클래식 파자마하면 그 장면이 머릿속에 오버랩된다.

The pajamas in the early scenes, set in a cozy cabin, are quintessentially classic American sleepwear. The combination with the model, the setting, and the colors all harmonize so perfectly that whenever I think of classic pajamas, that scene instantly comes to mind.

저는 항상 '다운튼 애비'에 등장하는 잠옷이 깊은 인상으로 남아 있습니다. 극 중 인물들은 잠옷조차 세심하게 갖추어 입는데, 실크나 면 소재에 은은하고 부드러운 색감으로 이루어져 있어 보기만 해도 편안함이 느껴졌습니다.

흔히 티셔츠 한 장 걸치고 잠드는 모습과는 다르게 보였고 ‘휴식조차도 하나의 의식처럼 소중히 대할 수 있구나’라는 생각을 하곤 했습니다. 드라마를 볼 때마다 만약 저에게도 그런 잠옷이 있다면 밤 시간이 훨씬 더 평온해지고, 마치 그 시대 속에 들어간 듯한 기분을 느낄 수 있을 것 같다는 상상을 하게 됩니다.

I’ve always been struck by the pajamas featured in Downton Abbey. Even the sleepwear worn by the characters is carefully chosen, crafted from silk or cotton in soft, muted tones that look effortlessly comfortable.

Unlike simply throwing on a t-shirt to sleep, these pajamas feel intentional, as if even rest can be treated as a small ritual. Every time I watch the show, I imagine that if I had pajamas like that, my nights would feel more serene, and I’d almost feel transported into that era.
