Notes from a Copenhagen–Helsinki Work Trip EDITOR'S NOTE
Team JO'S LOUNGE recently returned from a work trip to Copenhagen and Helsinki. The trip was for a campaign shoot set to launch in June, and it was a good time: revisiting some of our old spots while discovering new ones along the way. I thought about writing a roundup like last time, but it felt like too much would overlap — and honestly, I wanted to try something different. So instead, I'd like to share some scattered thoughts and feelings from a few places we visited. Our motto for Lounge Talk has always been write something useful, and I'm not sure this edition lives up to that (laughs). As always, read at your own pace :) |

I hadn't counted, but this year marks eleven full years since I started. Looking back at where I began, I feel like I've improved — at least a little — but there are things that have gotten worse too. One is that experience has made me hesitant to throw myself into new things the way I used to. When I first started, I had no knowledge of clothing and no real sense of how to work, so I bought a few large sheets of paper and started writing down everything I could think of to make better sleepwear. Things like: switch to more expensive thread (back when I didn't even know what made thread better), tighter buttonholes, better photography, sell in cooler(?) places — ideas that now look almost naive, written down with complete seriousness. Some of those things still haven't happened. Others, luckily, have. But looking back, what I gained most from that time was everything I learned from getting lost.
The photo is of the entrance to Cecilie Bahnsen's store — tucked behind a courtyard, then hidden behind recycling bins and parked cars, to the point where it took real nerve just to knock. Maybe they didn't have much choice (laughs), but standing there, thinking of all the times I'd talked myself out of things — this is hard for this reason, that won't work for that reason — I found myself asking: do I still have that kind of courage? The inside of the store is exactly what you'd expect from Copenhagen retail: undecorated, simple, cool. As if all that matters is that the clothes look good and you can try them on.

This photo is from outside The Children's Workshop at SMK (the National Gallery of Denmark). It might seem trivial in retrospect, but at the time I was struck by the paint smeared across the windows — such a stark contrast to the clean, beautiful museum around it. Of course it makes sense: kids painting freely will make a mess. But it made me realize how used I've become to controlling and containing myself.
Some things are naturally messy, and that's fine. When it comes to work — or anything, really — I thought maybe I need to stop chasing order and make peace with the mess that comes with getting somewhere. |

This beautiful space belongs to a couple who generously lent us their summer house for the shoot. As you can glimpse in the photos, one of them has a background working at FRAMA. I used to be embarrassed when my preferences were too obvious — probably because I was afraid of showing how shallow my taste was. Rationally, I knew everyone starts somewhere and grows through small, honest choices. But emotionally, I wanted to hide it.
Seeing a space where someone's taste had quietly accumulated over time — honestly, without pretense — I don't want to overstate it, but it made me want to stop pretending to know more than I do and head back to the beginner's hunting ground (anyone remember Nexus: The Kingdom of the Winds?).

The photos here are from Alvar Aalto House and Studio Aalto— the main reason we made the trip to Helsinki. If I had to name one thing the best people I've encountered in this work have in common, it would be: they think from the user's point of view, rigorously; they don't dress things up unnecessarily; and they work with their hands, not just their heads. I felt that again here. The door handle set almost flush against the door so it won't catch a sleeve. The obsessive miniature models. Walls covered in samples and archives.
I brought back a ceramic tile made by Arabia — originally designed for exterior walls — as a souvenir. The fact that I keep looking at it hoping it might rub off on me says it all: still a long way to go. |

To imagine freely and dive in without fear. Once you're in, stop second-guessing and execute. Then hold on long enough to see it through. These feel like ABCs — obvious things — but they get harder to live by as time goes on. The more you have in your head, the harder it is. And yet: looking back over a year or more, doing things perfectly has always been a fantasy. The memories that stick are the ones where I said something reckless and then had to make it work. Half the year is already gone. I want to spend what's left of it meaningfully, with the people I work with. |
